Why is a vision important?
As Yogi Berra said:
“If you don’t know where you are going, you’ll end up someplace else.”
It therefore all starts with your vision for what your world might look like. That vision acts as our guiding star.
What does a vision consist of?
While some can envision life 20 to 25 years ahead, for many such distant thoughts seem nebulous. We may not know what next week might bring so how can we imagine that far ahead?
And yet, I have personally developed visions around certain aspects of my own life five and more years in advance, gradually having the necessary conversations and taking the necessary steps to bring them to life.
More often than not, however, vision to me speaks more to a combination of the direction of travel of our lives, including work and business, and a sense for how we want to live each day, for what nourishes us and is important to us. It is built on answers to questions such as:
- What do I believe in?
- What are my values?
- What nourishes me?
In truth, I am in the third decade of a 40-year plus vision for a balanced lifestyle that allows me to continually nourish all parts of my being and contribute to the world around me. This has enabled me to prioritise my family every day, nurture enriching friendships, live in amazing places and do work that gives me purpose and that I truly enjoy.
The overall vision hasn’t changed in this time because it isn’t something distant but rather a reality I experience and grow into with each passing day. And yet the details of the canvass are constantly evolving as new horizons and opportunities appear.
It is ultimately clarity about ‘what is truly essential to you and why’ that lays the groundwork for every subsequent decision. Every request and opportunity can then be scrutinised through that lens.
Have a vision for how life, work or business might be different?
Let’s play!
Imagine a future where you are living your vision. Here are some questions to guide your thoughts:
- Why have I come here?
- How do I know I am in the right place?
- What am I feeling?
- What is important now?
- What am I going to do now?
- Where am I going to go now?
- Did I enjoy the journey here?
- What did I leave behind?
Remember, no journey is taken alone, so imagine extending your vision to all aspects of your world and even consider the ripple effects on those you engage with daily – family, friends and work colleagues.
The true purpose of this process is to isolate what is essential for you – what is important each and every day – and to focus on living into that. If we focus solely on the future, we risk missing out on what truly nourishes us and makes the game worth the candle.
In the vast tapestry of existence, a clear vision becomes the delicate thread guiding you through the labyrinth of choices. Each decision, each turning point, becomes an intimate dance with your vision, ensuring that every step resonates with purpose and harmony. By weaving this focused intent into the fabric of both your inner and outer worlds, you navigate life with a profound sense of alignment and grace.
Using your vision as your guiding star
With your vision as your guiding star, chart your path in reverse, back to this year and the coming months.
- What strategies can bring it to life?
But don’t stop there, narrow your focus further to this week, and finally, to today. After all, today is the only day we ever get anything done.
- What then can I do today that will have the most impact?
Every day is a step closer. Your vision isn’t something distant but rather a reality you grow into with each passing day. It will also evolve as you do so it is critical not to become a hostage to it.
