#329 What Really Matters in Life?

Busy? Overwhelmed?

You are not alone!

In fact, not only do many (most?) people feel increasingly busy but there is also a growing trend to measure ourselves by how much we get done.

The logic is “the more I get done the better person I am”.

Sound familiar?

And yet, having recently shouldered a first cousin’s coffin to his grave, I am increasingly curious as to what this incessant busyness is accomplishing.

At the funeral:

  • There was no recounting of the long list of things he did.
  • Nor did anyone complain about what he had not done.
  • Nor did anyone lament all that will forever remain undone.

All that mattered were the lives he touched.

These feel like more interesting questions to me right now:

  • Why do I do what I do?
  • How do I do it?
  • What impact does it have on others?

This is not about our legacy after we have returned to dust but rather about living a life that makes us excited about getting up tomorrow and for others to be excited to see us!

Questions in the Image:

  • What Matters in Life?

Nurturing Curiosity – Daily Practice: This is part of the Nurturing Curiosity series of tools, insights and questions designed to help nurture curiosity as part of our daily practice. In point of fact, every interaction we have is an opportunity to question what we are observing and how we and others are seeing the world. Also remember that questions come in many forms throughout our day – even the news of a tragedy in our families is a prompt to ask ourselves if we are living a life that gives us purpose.

About Tom O’Leary

I coach, mentor and teach leaders committed to a higher purpose who sense they can do better.

Together, we unlock deep insights that spur how they think, act and lead.

These are leaders who want to make a difference.

And yet, to make a difference we need to be different. This starts with how we think, what we question and how we decide!

This means spending time being curious about everything from where we place our attention to the choices we make and contemplating what might be possible so that when we take action, we can bring all our energy and power to bear.
