I was recently asked this question and here is my answer:

There are at least 2 questions here.

I would also question the assumption that higher motivation equals less procrastination. I have had many incredibly motivated colleagues who always left their assignments until the last minute. It also didn’t stop them from getting high grades.

I therefore wonder whether the term “procrastination” is all that helpful.

Let’s start with motivation. Ask yourself:

  • Do I enjoy what I am studying?
  • How might I make it more fun?
  • Is there something else I would prefer to be doing?
  • Why, ultimately, am I studying?

Specifically, in terms of “procrastination”, ask yourself:

  • What is the problem I am trying to solve?
