It was only this week that I finally realised that the concept of energy vampire (someone who drains other people’s emotional energy) not only applies to people but also to companies, organisations and indeed public services.

I’ve been working with people recently whose employers have basically sucked the energy out of them in return for cash. Burn out is the inevitable result and this not only has a massive cost for them personally but also for society at large. Such employers are transferring the cost to us all.

Questions need to be asked. So, is your employer an energy vampire? Does the environment in which you work nourish you? If not, what needs to change? Baby steps are better than none at all.

  • 2D: Write down what gives you energy and what sucks energy from you (every part of your experience – sounds, environments, people, scenarios, situations, foods, movies, types of conversations, types of books – the ways things are done (The How…….)
  • 3D: Start exploring the why of each:
    • What is it about this that gives me energy or sucks energy from me?
    • What aspect of the experience is it?
  • Applied – It isn’t possible or even ideal to avoid everything in the negative column.
    • Rather how might I re-frame something so that it shifts from being something that sucks energy from me to becoming something that gives me energy?
    • For example – a job interview – as a job interview it may feel stressful – as a learning opportunity it may feel exciting.
